Carina and Her Journey from the Philippines to Hanoi to Enhance Her Smile Aesthetics

Carina, a 71-year-old woman from the Philippines, initially planned to visit a dental clinic in Ho Chi Minh City with a friend for dental implant treatment.

Her decision was influenced by highly attractive advertisements:

    • Low cost: They were quoted approximately AUD 4,000.
    • Extremely short treatment time: The clinic promised to complete all procedures within 7–8 days with no need for a return visit.
    • Reviews: She had read online reviews before making her decision.

Carina reconsidered her decision

An acquaintance explained to her that completing implant treatment within one week is not reliable, as proper healing time is required. She realized that the promises of low cost and extremely short treatment duration at that clinic could potentially be misleading or even a scam.

In reality, her friend – due to budget constraints – still proceeded with the original plan at the Ho Chi Minh City clinic. However, the outcome confirmed Carina’s concerns:

Costs doubled: Instead of AUD 4,000 as initially quoted, several thousand dollars were added as unexpected expenses.

Her friend now has to plan a return visit after one year to complete the remaining payments.

Carina also came across a case on Facebook where a man developed an infection after implant placement and experienced significant complications. This made her genuinely anxious and caused her to reconsider her initial plan.

Ultimately, Carina decided to change her flight from Ho Chi Minh City to Hanoi less than a day before departure. Her trip was supported by a partner organization of the clinic, specializing in assisting international patients during treatment in Vietnam.

This team supported patients by:

    • Arranging flight tickets
    • Planning treatment schedules
    • Assisting with visa procedures
    • Booking appointments with doctors
    • Recommending sightseeing activities during the stay

After arriving in Hanoi and resting from the flight, Carina visited Thuy Anh Dental Clinic for her first in-person consultation.

Initial Condition

Carina’s oral condition mainly involved dissatisfaction with her existing dentures:

    • Prior to surgery, she was using removable dentures.
    • She reported that her old dentures were excessively protrusive. Additionally, the teeth on the dentures were too large for her facial proportions.
    • The occlusion was not properly aligned, causing discomfort and difficulty during use.

Carina had planned implant treatment more than five years ago. However, due to the high cost in Melbourne and the long treatment duration (approximately one year), she continued using her old dentures until deciding to seek treatment in Vietnam.

Treatment Planning

After understanding the patient’s concerns and expectations, a comprehensive diagnostic process was conducted, including:

    • Clinical oral examination and assessment of each tooth
    • Panoramic X-ray imaging
    • Cone Beam CT scan

These data allowed the doctor to accurately evaluate:

    • Jawbone volume and density
    • Location of critical anatomical structures such as the inferior alveolar nerve, mental nerve, and maxillary sinus
    • Condition of remaining teeth
    • Degree of occlusal vertical dimension loss due to tooth wear
Initial intraoral images and X-rays

After collecting complete diagnostic data, all information was transferred into a digital treatment planning system.

This technology enables 3D analysis of the patient’s dental and jaw structure.

As a result, the doctor can:

    • Accurately assess bone anatomy and related structures
    • Determine optimal implant positions
    • Simulate the final prosthetic outcome

For international patients, this step is particularly critical, as the entire treatment plan is established in detail before actual surgery.

This enhances both safety and predictability of the outcome.

The doctor thoroughly discussing the patient’s current condition and the most appropriate treatment options.

Implant Surgery with Surgical Guide

Based on the digital treatment plan, a surgical guide was designed and fabricated.

This guide helps the doctor place implants precisely according to:

    • Position
    • Angle
    • Depth

Guided surgery provides:

    • Increased accuracy
    • Reduced tissue trauma
    • Shorter surgical time
    • Higher long-term success rate

After thorough discussion, the final treatment plan included:

1. Implant Placement

    • 6 implants in the upper jaw: to fully restore missing teeth and create a harmonious aesthetic and functional smile
    • 1 implant in the lower jaw

2. Prosthetic Restoration

The goals of prosthetic treatment were:

  • Restore tooth length
    • Re-establish chewing function
    • Improve smile aesthetics

Treatment Phases (2 Trips)

Trip 1: Initial Phase

Duration: approximately 10–14 days

Day 1: Placement of 6 upper jaw implants using a surgical guide for maximum precision

This is crucial because while prosthetics can be adjusted over time, implant positions in bone cannot be changed.

Therefore, accurate 3D placement is key to long-term success.

Immediately after surgery, impressions were taken to fabricate an immediate temporary prosthesis on implants.

Day 2 (after 2 days):

Placement of upper temporary prosthesis. Tooth preparation and impressions for lower ceramic restoration. Placement of 1 lower jaw implant.

Day 3:

    • Placement of lower ceramic crowns
    • Occlusion check and adjustment
    • Evaluation of chewing function

Day 4:

    • Follow-up check and suture removal

Results After Trip 1

Experience with the team:

    • Staff: She found them highly professional, attentive to her needs, and very caring. She especially appreciated the interpreter, who gave her a bag to keep warm in cold weather.
    • Doctor: She described him as highly skilled, extremely meticulous, and a perfectionist. He worked with great precision and aimed to avoid any errors.
    • Sensations during treatment: The consultation process was detailed and clear. She was surprised that she experienced no pain throughout the procedure, despite initially expecting discomfort due to bone-related surgery.
    • Temporary prosthesis results: Although temporary, she found the result aesthetically pleasing. The doctor assured her that the final outcome would meet her expectations.

Trip 2 Plan

    • Return schedule: She plans to return in June for the final treatment phase.
    • She is confident in recommending the clinic to friends and family, believing she made the right decision.
